Morning Session

National Ski Patrol – Bringing Calm to Chaos

The morning Public Affairs Panel will be presented by three award-winning and accomplished National Ski Patrol members. Get ready to learn how to bring calm to chaos, on or off the slopes. Learning about the “Three E’s” is a course that enhances ski patrollers’ emotional intelligence, empathy, and empowerment. Their mission extends beyond the slopes, with an aim to empower FWSA leaders and members to not only become healthier, more composed skiers but also better family members, life partners, employees, citizens, and ultimately, better humans. Panelists will include:

Tony Margulies CHt

Tony Margulies CHt is an award-winning ski patroller, wellness educator and hypnotherapist with 15 years of leadership in the National Ski Patrol. He is the author of NSP Far West Region Wellness Fundamentals, “Three E’s.” Tony is also a certified hypnotherapist who helps clients achieve their goals with the subconscious mind. He has spoken on wellness for multiple events, including UCSD, CSUN, HCSU, Nestle Corporation, TD Ameritrade, AA, and NSP, and inspires others to live healthier and happier lives.

Wayne Wong

Wayne Wong is a seasoned NSP leader with a dedicated career spanning over 48 years. His expertise extends beyond patrolling, as a Nordic Patroller, teacher, and administrator. He is currently serving as the Safety and Wellness Advisor of the Far West Division, NSP and is the cornerstone of the SoCal Region. His contributions include serving as an Outdoor Emergency Care Instructor, CPR Instructor, and Mammoth Nordic Patrol Director. His passion lies in empowering others and integrating personal insights with clinical skills anyone can learn to use for positive changes in life.

Barbara Razo

Barbara Razo was the 2016 Patroller of the Nation for the NSP and has over 40 years of dedicated service. A licensed Emergency Medical Technician, she has worked for a variety of Southern California private ambulance companies. She is the NSP Safety & Wellness Team Representative to the San Bernardino Mountain Patrol. Currently in addition to working in EMS and Ski Patrol part-time, she works in Hospice Administration full-time. Barbara thrives to educate and share new skills to help new candidates and EMS personnel better handle tough calls when there is chaos, tension and anxiety.

Afternoon Session

Preserving Our Heritage – Western Snowsports Museums & Libraries

The Saturday Afternoon Public Affairs Panel, “Preserving Our Heritage – Western Snowsports Museums and Libraries,” will feature four notable snowsports museum/library founders and historians, who will provide valuable information to take back to your clubs and councils on efforts being made to sustain snowsports through research, preservation, education and publication of snowsports history. The panel participants are:

Bill Clark

Bill Clark is the Executive Director of the Auburn Ski Club, Inc. and the Western SkiSport Museum, founded in 1969 at Donner Summit. He is also a member of the SNOW Sports Museum Foundation, working to establish a new museum with a mission to preserve the winter sports and Olympic history of the Sierra Nevada Region. Bill began skiing as a Junior Far West racer with the Auburn Ski Club and was a four-way competitor at Sierra College. He is a former member of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame selection committee and Far West Alpine and the Far West Nordic Board of Directors.

Alan K. Engen

Alan K. Engen is considered today to be one of the premier historians on winter sports in Utah. He was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 1991 and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2004. He served as Director of Skiing in Alta and instructor for more than 40 years after becoming one of the last American four-event competitors. He authored For the Love of Skiing: A Visual History and First Tracks: A Century of Skiing Utah, in addition to numerous articles. He was founder of the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center with its Alf Engen Ski Museum at Utah’s Olympic Park.

John W. Lundin

John W. Lundin is a prolific writer and award-winning author of books and articles primarily regarding ski jumping and ski resorts. He is a winner of the Skade Award from the International Skiing History Association (ISHA), and the Western Ski Heritage Award from FWSA. Lundin was one of the founders of the Washington State Ski & Snowboard Museum (WSSSM) which opened on Snoqualmie Pass in October, 2015, and is a member of its Board of Directors. He is currently working internationally to link our ski jumping history with the old world, through the Holmenkollen Ski Museum in Oslo, Norway.

Ingrid Wicken

Ingrid Wicken founded the California Ski Library, in Norco, California in 2004. She is widely considered the leading authority on the history of skiing in Southern California. She is the recipient of the International Skiing History Association’s Skade Award and the FWSA’s Western Ski Heritage Award. Ingrid has written four books on skiing history: Pray for Snow: The History of Skiing in Southern California (2002), Skiing in Southern California (2007), Lost Ski Areas of Southern California (2012), and 50 Years of Flight: Ski Jumping in California 1900-1950 (2017).
