Racing is for everyone. The handicap system allows skiers of all abilities to find a competitive level. Much like golf's numerical handicapping system, skiers are grouped by their past performance and race against individuals with similar skills.

Although as many as 150 or 200 skiers might be competing in a league race on a typical Saturday at Mammoth, Lake Tahoe area or a ski resort near Portland, they're not all competing for the same prize. Skiers compete within their ability group, so that maybe only a dozen or so racers are vying for a particular title on a given day.

Far West Ski Association recognizes that the racing program helps build better skiers.

The racing at Ski Week is fun and exciting, as the layout of the courses have some nice terrain changes and a variety of slope to contend with. Competitors should have a great time. Only non-seeded racers will be racing in the qualifier on the first race day, anybody else that wants to race the course can either use a coupon or pay to run the course.

Far West Athletic Scholarship Program

FWSA awards Athletic Scholarships to developing Alpine ski racers participating in programs within our geographic region.

With special thanks to our sponsors, Whitefish Mountain Resort and Grouse Mountain Lodge in Montana, and Schure Sports, Inc., the makers of Karbon brand ski clothing, we are able to fund scholarships ranging in value from $250 to $1,500.

Scholarships assist athletes who are committed to pursuing a competitive Alpine racing program. Scholarship funds may be used to offset training expenses and competition entrance fees, but may not be used for personal travel or equipment.

The 2016 Far West Championships will be at Alpine Meadows on March 19 & 20 in Northern California. The race clinics and pacesetter races will be on Friday, the Slaloms will be on Saturday and the Giant Slaloms will be on Sunday.
