Who & What's New For 2013
Ski Industry Asks Congress to Act on Climate Change
Climate change is serious business for the ski industry--without snow, there won't be much of an industry left. It is one of the first industries to visibly suffer from climate change as there's less reliable snow in recent years. It foreshadows the impact that many industries will experience, such as tourism, hospitality and retail. 108 ski areas from around the U.S. have signed the Climate Declaration, which urges Congress to address climate change.
Changes at NSAA
Troy Hawks, our friend at the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has been replaced by an outsource contractor. You may remember Troy from the '11 convention as one of the lunch speakers. Over time he has provided FWSA with valuable insight in to the business at NSAA and updated news about developments at resorts. He has also provided such additional information as water rights and snow making developments at resorts, resort lands acquisition and on mountain programs for safety, Lids on Kids and other special development programs. Our relationship with NSAA should not change.
Mammoth Mountain to Host US Olympic Ski Hopefuls
The United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) has named Mammoth Mountain as its official training ground for the nation's Olympic freeskiing and snowboarding hopefuls ahead of the Sochi 2014 Games. The California ski resort will play host to spring and fall training camps for athletes, including the likes of world champions Ted Ligety - a Turin 2006 Winter Olympic gold medallist - and Mikaela Shiffrin, through 2019, which means it will also be used by snowsport stars for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.
