Who & What's New For 2013

  • Ski Butlers Wins Awards
Great news for one of our Far West Benefits partners. Ski Butlers was the recipient of the 2012 Vail Small Business of the Year Award at the 10th Annual Vail Valley Success Awards. These awards spotlight local businesses that not only run their business efficiently, but give back to the community as well. Shawn Manwaring, Ski Butlers GM in Vail, was a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Ski Butlers was also nominated for Spirit of the Valley Award, and Young Professional of the Year Award. Added to that, they also won the 2013 U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Small Business Award for the second consecutive year. "The Blue Ribbon Award winners show that, even facing uncertainty and economic challenges, small businesses can grow and succeed," said Thomas J. Donohue, U.S. Chamber president and CEO. "They are America's economic engine, driving growth and job creation all across this country."

    NASTAR Finals in Aspen/Snowmass
Aspen/Snowmass will host the 2013 and 2014 Nature Valley NASTAR National Championships this year. Skiers will compete at the resort for national titles in various divisions. To qualify for the 2013 Championships, which are set for March 20-24, NASTAR racers must earn a top-five ranking in their age and ability category by February 18, 2013

Far West Charity & Community Service Recognition Program

  • New for 2013
FWSA encourages all clubs and councils to get involved with charities and community service. The Charities and Community Service Recognition Program has been recognizing clubs for their charitable work at each convention for the past seven years. Information can be obtained on the Far West website regarding this wonderful program, and how easy it is to apply for this recognition.

The top 3 clubs will be invited to display a picture board at Convention. From these three, the winning club will receive $300, and the two runner-ups will each receive $100 to be donated to the charity of their choice. In addition, we have now added a secondary level to that, and will award $100 to the top ski club council. All groups that apply will be recognized at Convention.

Application deadline is March 15, 2013. For more information about how to get your club on the "Honor Roll of Clubs and Councils Supporting Charities", or any Charity & Community questions, contact Sigrid Noack.

Far West Athletic Scholarships Program

  • Ski Week Raffle was Another Huge Success
The Athletic Scholarship raffle raised just over $3,000 this year at our annual Far West Ski Week in Aspen. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped sell tickets. Dick Shawkey commented, "Without their enthusiastic help, it would never have happened". He also wanted to thank J.D. Fischer for donating 20 copies of his book "Geezers, Groomers and Parabolics" as consolation prizes in the raffle. Al Lawrence, Balboa Ski and Sport Club, was the lucky winner this year.

We are reminded that all of the funds go to support FWSA Athletic Scholarships, and are deposited with the Far West Ski Foundation, a tax-exempt charity. As always, we are indebted to Schure Sports for their generous support of the athletic scholarship program. Karbon is recognized as a top-of-the-line clothing company for winter sports. FWSA member clubs are reminded that Karbon offers a special team price on their clothing.

Interested parties can contact Dick Shawkey or Randy Lew for more information.

    Highlighting our Athletic Scholarhip Sponsors
Whitefish Mountain Resort, Grouse Mountain Lodge and Schure Sports: These awesome industry partners have been sponsors of the Far West Athletic Scholarship Program since 2004. It all began with Whitefish Mountain Resort and Grouse Mountain Lodge coming together in 2004 offering to sponsor the program. Schure Sports joined us in 2005 at our Ski Week in Aspen, donating a Karbon ski suit to the winner of our first Ski Week Raffle, and the rest is history.

This terrific program has been growing by leaps and bounds year after year, thanks to Robb Margrave, who headed up the program in the early days, and now, Dick Shawkey, who has taken the program to the heights that it is today. Not only do we have these three incredible industry partners, but also over the past few years, we have added a number of clubs and councils on as Athletic Scholarship partners. What an inspirational program to be associated with, and it benefits so many of our upcoming young stars. Thank you to all of our sponsors and partners.

Belize is rightly considered one of the top scuba diving and snorkeling destinations on the planet. The Belize Barrier Reef, second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, runs the length of its coastline, and the country has three open-ocean atolls. Diving and snorkeling are superb all along the barrier reef. Far West will be traveling to Belize this September.
